The people and open data behind our maps.

Map display and base map

MapLibre GL JS is licensed under BSD-3-Clause; the full licence and notices are included with this site. Vector maps are provided by OpenFreeMap, using OpenMapTiles and © OpenStreetMap contributors. Map attribution also appears in the map's attribution control. OpenStreetMap data is available under the Open Database Licence.

Terrain elevations & contours

Contours are generated in the browser from the same elevation data using maplibre-contour (BSD-3-Clause); its licence notice is retained. Contour labels use approximate source elevations in metres. The 3D view enhances visual heights by 1.3×; it does not change those elevations.

The Terrain Tiles open dataset is managed by Mapzen, a Linux Foundation project, and hosted on AWS. Elevation sources have different resolutions and dates; heights are approximate.

See the dataset attribution and individual licences for details.

Place search and outdoor layers

Place search uses Photon with OpenStreetMap data. Optional hiking, mountain biking, alpine routes, climbing sites, ski pistes/lifts and accommodation are queried from the public Overpass API. These are community-mapped features, not verified itineraries, bookable accommodation or current access/safety information. Search terms and requested map areas are sent to the relevant service. Provider caching and rate limits apply.

Specialist outdoor references

Clickable feature details use OpenStreetMap through Overpass. With an activity selected and specialist trail maps enabled, hiking and MTB reference overlays come from Waymarked Trails, and the pistes-only ski overlay comes from OpenSnowMap. They provide map imagery independently of detail-query availability; they do not populate the clickable feature list. Live provider availability is not guaranteed. For specialist browsing, see OpenSnowMap for ski pistes and lifts, Waymarked Trails for marked hiking routes (also cycling, MTB and winter sports), and OpenBeta for climbing areas and routes. Optional rock and ice/mixed route discovery uses OpenBeta’s public GraphQL API. It returns a bounded sample of individual route records, grades and locations from up to eight crags in the viewed area. A route pin may use its crag’s location and is labelled accordingly; it is not a vertical route line or a current conditions report. No OpenBeta photos or route-description text are imported. Coverage and live API availability vary. Waymarked Trails overlays are credited under CC BY-SA 3.0 Germany, and OpenSnowMap tiles under CC BY-SA, with OSM data under ODbL. Attribution is included in the map and here. Only tiles for the active view are requested; bulk/offline downloads are not offered. The site's cross-origin referrer policy supplies the origin required by these services.

OpenBeta's published documentation places its climbing data under CC0, excluding photos and source code; individual image licences still apply. Specialist map tiles and hosted APIs have their own attribution and usage terms, separate from the underlying data licence. No third-party route photos or guidebook descriptions are copied here. Check the resort, park or land manager for current openings and access restrictions.

Private GPX previews

Imported GPX tracks remain in the current browser view. This map does not upload the GPX file or automatically publish its track. Map and elevation providers receive normal network requests for the area being viewed. Track distance and ascent are approximate and depend on the file's sampling and elevation quality.
